What is a CRB Disclosure?

This is the process by which employers can complete and submit an application in order to find out if individuals have a police record. If so, whether there is a conviction, final warning, reprimand or a caution. Also included with the Enhanced check is the list held by the ISA which names those who are barred from working with Children and Vulnerable Adults. The results of the Disclosure checks are provided in a certificate which can be used by employers in conjunction with an application for employment.

Types of Disclosure Available

ELAS offers three different types of disclosures:

1) Standard Disclosure
2) Enhanced Disclosure
3) Voluntary Disclosure

The type of criminal background check your organisation may need depends upon the position a prospective employee and/or volunteer has applied for.

Each type of disclosure ensures that every business sector can rely on our CRB team to process the application best suited to meet their organisation’s needs. .

* Standard Disclosure

The Standard criminal background record check contains details of all convictions held on the Police National Computer. This includes current and 'spent' convictions as well as details of any cautions, reprimands or final warnings. The significance of obtaining this crucial information cannot be overstated. Although a prior criminal record does not always predict future criminal intent.

* Enhanced Disclosure

This is recommended when the position applied for involves any contact with children or vulnerable adults. In general, the type of work being offered will involve regular care, supervision, training or sole responsibility for such people.

Enhanced Disclosure provides a more comprehensive background check than the Standard Disclosure. Enhanced Disclosure includes a check of local police records. The Chief Officer of Police may release information for inclusion in an Enhanced Disclosure when that information pertains to the safety and security of anyone who may receive care, supervision, and training or may be solely dependent upon the person in the position a prospective employee has applied for. These positions often include, teachers, teacher aides, nurse’s aides and nursing home attendants among others. Virtually any position that involves the care of children and/or vulnerable adults should demand that the safety and welfare of this population be protected and maintained at all costs. Therefore, a thorough and comprehensive criminal background record check is strongly urged in order to ensure that any potential harm to individuals under the care of a prospective employee be identified and diverted by the investigative resources made available to your organisation through Enhanced Disclosure services.

This will also check ISA Children and Vulnerable Adults List where requested.

* Voluntary Disclosure

The CRB defines a volunteer to be ‘a person who is engaged in any activity which involves spending time, unpaid (except for travelling and other approved out-of-pocket expenses), doing something which aims to benefit some third party other than or in addition to a close relative’. More often than not, volunteers are altruistic individuals who enjoy helping others. It is unlikely they would take offence if asked to submit to a background check. The benefits of disclosure are clear. The safety and welfare of children and vulnerable adults is secure in the knowledge that employer, employee and those under the care of each person in a position of responsibility are at lower risk of injury or harm because careful steps have been taken to minimize and eliminate any potential threat to their safety or well being through the appropriate use of Standard or Enhanced Disclosures.
