Swine Flu Update

With more than 9,700 confirmed cases of swine flu in the UK the Government has announced changes to the way the virus is being tackled. There has not been a flu pandemic in the UK since 1968.

However, even with all the current publicity this should not result in any higher levels of staff absences than any normal winter flu outbreak.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

 ·        The symptoms of swine flu are similar to seasonal flu, sore throat, coughing and fever.

·        Many children are already suffering from mild symptoms and making a full recovery.

·       Schools are not now closing as a result of the outbreak.

 ·       Prevent spread - Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and wash your hands frequently.

It is important to concentrate on simple steps that everyone can take to prevent catching cold and flu based on good respiratory and hand hygiene.  Always use a tissue to catch your sneezes.  Throw away used tissues on which germs can linger, and regularly wash your hands.

The Government recommends that people should read up on swine flu symptoms and then use the NHS direct swine flu symptom checker either online or through the NHS helpline number

Keep up to date with Employment Law

As employers have a duty of care in the workplace for all employees, if you are diagnosed with Swine flu you should remain away from work until you have been given the all clear from your Doctor. Medical evidence will be requested. Normal rules for reporting absence and Statutory Sick Pay will apply.

To state that you are afraid of contracting an illness is not a sufficient reason for not attending work.  Disciplinary action may be considered in the event of this happening.  Merely staying at home because of such a fear will be seen as an unauthorised absence.
