Be Careless With Twitter and it might not just be your heart that breaks

Recent headlines naming and shaming some top celebrities have demonstrated all too clearly the dangers of reckless use of social networking systems such as Twitter.

Employment law experts warn that it is not just the rich and famous who are at risk of getting their fingers burnt by careless use of electronic communications, especially if people get carried away in the romantice run up to Valentine’s Day.

Peter Mooney, Head of Consultancy at Employment Law Advisory Services, said: “In the past, buying a card or flowers required a little pre-meditated thought, whereas now, a text message or email can be sent in haste, leaving the sender to repent at leisure.  While messages may begin innocently, recipients of texts and tweets could misconstrue the messages they receive, and possibly, in the most extreme case, end up taking the case to tribunal.

“Millions of people now use these social networking applications which, while fun, can be very distracting, and could potentially break the bank.  Social networking during office hours, can result in workplace claims of harassment, or disciplinary action for time-wasting and inappropriate use of office systems.”

Putting the issue of tribunals aside, with many firms in the region struggling to stay afloat thanks to the recession and problems caused by the snow and ice, ELAS says that few bosses will take a romantic view of fresh disruptions.

Peter Mooney continued: "Unromantic as it may sound, the harsh reality is that these are crucial times for many firms. They need everyone pulling their weight. Further delays and lost hours could be the final straw.

“Use Twitter carefully or it might not just be your heart that Cupid hits with his arrow – it could be your wallet too.”
